atjf interview :: pela

After the Jump presents Pela, this Saturday June 21st, for After the Jump Fest in Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY, performing in the early evening on the free Main Street stage at 7:30pm.

Listen :: Waiting on the Stairs

MIA: Musically, how did the band form, what past experiences do you carry with you?

PELA: We all accidentally met and formed between 2002/2003 in Brooklyn, NY. We were all living more or less in the city and just fell into being a band.

MIA: Describe the feeling of living and making music in New York, feel free to share a memory or a certain place (bar, restaurant, record store) that makes you feel like home.

PELA: Playing in Red Hook in 2003 to nobody at a bar called “Lillies” which is no longer there, Having the bar owner tell us to turn it down and our guitar player punching a dude in the face, breaking his glasses.. sort of brings the old days back.

MIA: How does the band like to get ready for a live show? Is there a favorite song that you enjoy to perform live?

PELA: Sometimes we go our own ways before shows.. back to the hotel or whatever. It really depends. Favorite songs change as well. Usually something we worked on pre-tour that we are seeing a reaction from.

MIA: What are your recommended records so far of ‘08?

PELA: Hehe, it is hilarious how bad we are at that… we listen to whatever people give us. It seems like we have been on a Raconteurs kick this tour. Also driving through the desert this year, listening to Roy Orbison was really cool, too.

MIA: Name a visual artist or piece of work that inspires you.

PELA: I’m really fond of Mexican folk art. It doesn’t influence our music, but it can be a really nice way to compliment the work when it’s completed.

MIA: Please share a mixtape with a theme of your choice.
