“I’m a little worried [about the new album]. It’s a pretty exhausting record. It’s quite dense and I think some of the decisions we made don’t always go in the most obvious direction. We were thinking a lot more about what we’d want to play when we were up onstage rather than actually what you’d want to hear on a record.” -Brand New lead vocalist and guitarist Jesse Lacey-

Recently released in September 2009, Brand New‘s fourth studio album Daisy on Interscope Records is quite the departure from previous efforts. The album begins and ends with a gentle recorded hymn that leads to chaotic guitars, and hoarse hardcore screams that echo throughout each song.

When speaking to others about Daisy, the fans seem to not know what to make of the new album. Uncharacteristically to their prior albums, Brand New present a collection of music that challenges every single listener. It is meant to be taken in as a brief whole, rather than a single song experience.

The last track Noro showcases the beauty of Brand New again. Resting on the edge of prior work and leading in to the new, so to speak. As the harmonious vocals repeat “I’m on my way to hell”, it’s reassuring to hear how the band transcends such worry into acknowledgment remembering “Well I’ve tried. God knows that I’ve tried.”
