mp3: stone temple pilots – big empty (purple, 1994)

artwork: charmaine olivia

let’s go back to the year of 1994. do you remember that time?

it was the summer before i turned thirteen while my parents got divorced, and listening to the boston rock radio stations like waaf, wbcn, and wfnx along with actual music videos that were played all day long on mtv was what got me through those warm days.

stone temple pilot’s album purple was released that year, along with the movie, the crow. the track “big empty” was a perfect song to be discovered, and my memories then bring me back to the stone temple pilots’ mtv unplugged live performance. my connection to this track was the sensual, slow progression leading up to that loud, distorted chorus. people talked of big empty’s lyrics as if it was about a drug fueled relationship with yourself or with someone else. at my age and time, i only could feel how good the song was and didn’t completely know what to make of the lyrics. however now, almost 20 years later.. i believe i understand the words now more than i ever did, and it means something to me of comfort, some quiet, and it reminds me of being home.
