Say The Word Now…

“Most art (and music) is shit. But it’s worth listening to and look at, ’cause when you finally see something you like, it’s fantastic.” – The Knife

This is never truer than with cover versions. Especially of songs you already love. So many covers massacre tunes you know, but once in a while they really really work. And in some instances supercede the original (see Soft Cell’s Tainted Love).

I bring to you three sets of originals and covers which I really think work, in their own style.

Some Velvet Morning
Flowers are the things we know
Secrets are the things we grow
Learn from us very much
Look at us but do not touch

Original: Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra
Cover: Primal Scream & Kate Moss

Sex (I’m A)
I’m a toy, come and play with me
Say the word now
Wrap your legs around mine and ride me tonight

(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
When I’m watchin’ my TV
and that man comes on to tell me
how white my shirts can be
Well he can’t be a man
’cause he doesn’t smoke
the same cigarettes as me

Original: Rolling Stones
Cover: Cat Power

Have gotten into many arguments with die hard stone fans when I state that DEVO improved Satisfaction with thier cover. That was over 20 years ago and I still think DEVO’s version can hold it’s own with the Stones original.

Thin White Rope does a *killer* version of “Some Velvet Morning.”

    hey guys

Speaking of the Rolling Stones, I saw a commercial for a VH1 special on this band Platinum Weird where Mick’s saying that they’re “the most famous band noone’s ever heard of.” i think they’re some band from the 70s that never released a record or something.

does anyone know anything about this?
