Sunday Best (Week 8)

When I thought about including another Elliott Smith song on the Sunday Best, I must say that I had some reservations about the fact that he was just included in last week’s edition. Then I stopped and thought about it, and you know, this little thing that I do, is my world. I make it happen, and I do it all by myself. So, to hell with it. Here is another, newly available Elliott Smith rarity. It’s called “Dancing On The Highway,” and up until last week, only live versions of the song were available. I’m excited about this one.

Dancing On The Highway

Here if you want me, listening so close from far away
memorized what you told me, like a foreigner on holiday
know to smile at confusion, don’t forget the soul that smiles on me
Dancing on the highway, the broken line that led from you to me
Well, I’ll be at my station all night, so come on by if you feel like

Still here if you want me. Look at what I can do with empty time
A lost love that likes to haunt me
it’s waiting around to meet me when I die
Death surrounds, protects the living – this is what you said and I agreed
Not to be so unforgiving, just because your soul is untimely free
Cause I’m here if you want me, my love, dancing on the highway

But your sun still burns my eye
Oh, why?
Oh, why?

I remember stumbling upon the work of Bill Ricchini awhile back when someone highly recommended his album Ordinary Time. I bought the album, and listened to it alot, and sadly it became one of those albums that you listen to so much in such a short period of time, that when you put it away, you literally put it away. Well recently I’ve been reading chatter about him again, and the fact that he has since put out newer stuff, so I decided to look into it. “Cold Wind Will Blow Through Your Door” has every element that I look for in a song. I look for atomosphere, I look for an emotional string, I look for melody and harmony, and I look for sincerity. You’ll find all of that with this track.

Cold Wind Will Blow Through Your Door

Night will follow day
Sure as the sun and moon
Remember I will always be with you
If i’m out of words to say
And I understand you
When you see a darkness coming through
Remember to keep one take shelter from the storm
The night will not last for much more
I wrote in a small note
put on your winter coat
A cold wind will blow through your door
Night will follow day
Sure as the sun and moon
Remember I will always be with you
Just fold your hands and pray
And I am beside you
Tell mother I hope to see you through
Remember to keep one take shelter from the storm
The night will not last for much more
I wrote in a small note
put on your winter coat
A cold wind will blow through your door
