Anytime that I listen to a band such as Sigur Ros I am automatically, instantaneously filled with overwhelming emotions. Recently, while watching the ending of The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, I was quickly overcome with a sadness. I don’t have to explain the sadness that is felt to anyone that has seen the film. The part I’m referring to is when they finally find the shark that ate his friend, and Staralfur starts fading its way in. I honestly think it is one of the most powerful cinematic moments EVER. Bask in the beauty that is Sigur Ros.

Staralfur (Staring Elf)

(English)

Blue Night Over The Sky
Blue Night Over Me
Disappeared Out Of The Window
Me With Hands
Hidden Under My Cheek
I Think About My Day
Today And Yesterday
I Put On My Blue Nighties
Go Straight To Bed
I Pull The Soft Covers Over
Close My Eyes
I Hide My Head Under The Covers
A Little Elf Stares At Me
Runs Towards Me But Doesn’t Move
From Place – Himself
A Staring Elf
I Open My Eyes
Take The Crusts Out
Stretch Myself And Check (If I Haven’t)
Returned Again And Everything Is Okay
Still There Is Something Missing
Like All The Walls

Throughout the years, I have watched Dredg go from being a band that was very young and obscure, to being a band that has not only defined their sound, but has solidified a uniquely strong fanbase. If there were ever such an award for “coming a long way,” Dredg would win it. This band has matured so much over the past 7 or 8 years, it’s insane. The song that I picked today is a B-Side to their latest release Catch Without Arms, and is also used over the closing credits of the film Waterbourne. I love Dredg. I hope that you do too.

Stone By Stone

Stone by stone – I constructed a cathedral.
Stone by stone – built it up and wrecked it down.
Stone by stone – everyone’s looking to wear the crown.
Stone by stone – even though they got it all.

He’s gaining up to you
Cannot plead to get this strength even
You called me out to lead me on
I am ready, please forgive

I am running a marathon in glass shoes, I am hiding behind windows
Stone by stone – were they headed up or down?
Stone by stone – always looking, never found
Stone by stone – even though they got it all

He’s gaining up to you
Cannot plead to get this strength even
You called me out to lead me on
I’m ready, please forgive

He’s gaining up to you
Cannot plead to get this strength even
You called me out to lead me on
I am ready, please forgive

He’s gaining up to you
Cannot plead to get this strength even
You called me out to lead me on
I am ready – I’m ready

I am running a marathon in glass shoes, I am hiding behind windows
Stone by stone, build it up and watch it fall.

I know exactly what you mean about Sigur Ros.

No matter what mood I’m in or emotion I’m felling, they suit it.

You’re right, Dredg has come a long way from the rap-metal of Concious / Orph demos to writing soundtracks. Gavin & Drew have also written 2 songs on The Sound of Animals Fighting.
