[Every so often it’s nice to bring in a new contributing writer to the world of music is art. This week we are bringing in founder of record label Productive Audio, Katie Wheeler. Enjoy her words and favorite music selections of the week below.]
With summer well on the way the Electronic music world is thriving with fresh beats from some of our favourite producers. There has been a whirlwind of high quality releases coming through at the moment and I have compiled a top seven for you to check out.
Fractures – Won’t Win
Fractures released, “Won’t Win,” the leading track of his self-titles E.P. earlier this week. The track is thriving with deep felt emotion that penetrates to your core. On the surface the track seems a bit depressing with lyrics like “ I’m half asleep, you’re medicated, Crumbling inside ourselves, My eyeballs leak, they’re lubricating, Try to think of something else”. When in actual fact if you listen between the lines it gives a sense of hope and overcoming people who do you wrong.
Arrows Down – Fugitives (Pyrrhic Remix)
I have been following Pyrrhic from when he first evolved from Lee Sanderson and I discovered Arrows Down when he collaborated with ThermalBear for their release for the Sasha Involv3r edition on Ministry of Sound. So, when the news hit that these two newcomers found each other the angel bells started to ring for me. Pyrrhic’s remix of this track turns down the melancholy vibe from the original and creates a more dance floor friendly take.
Chet Faker – Talk is Cheap (Ta-Ku Remix)
This remix is a clear vision of Australians finest uniting and forming a sublime track. Don’t get me wrong the original is AMAZING! But there is something about Ta-Ku’s remix that gives it a warming ambient feel, which caters to every musical bone in my body.
Sailor & I – Turn Around (AME Remix)
This is a perfect display of the reasons on why Life & Death is one of my favourite labels. ‘Turn Around’ is a perfect mutation of euphoric vocals from Alexander Sjodin and German duo, Ame’s delightful production skills. This one has been circulating any dance floor that has been graced with the likes of Midland, Solomun and Tale of Us.
Machine Drum – Want Me
The Adult Swim’s Singles Programme kicked off last week with an awe-inspiring release from the legend, “Georgio Moroder.” This week’s instalment comes from Californian born Travis Stewart aka “Machinedrum.” “Want Me” makes brilliant use of an elegant female vocal sample, accompanied by Machinedrum’s trademark emotional sound and infatuating stabs.
Deadboy – Lisa
We are all partial to a free download aren’t we? And this one comes in fine form from the Garage reviving Londoner. “Deadboy” is having a massive summer and this rework of Coldcut & Lisa Stansfield’s “People Hold On” just cements his status on the underground scene. Skilfully merging genres is what Deadboy does best and this 90’s influenced track is a fine example…
Andru – Sorry (Female Flip)
Another artist putting legit free music on the table comes from Aussie producer, Female. With a soothing piano melody and enchanting vocals the track is simply beautiful.
Chris Malinchak Feat. Mikky Ekko – Stranger
Chris Malinchak, known globally for his hit, “So Good To Me” has debuted his new track “Stranger” on Pete Tongs show on Radio 1. This New York based producer churns out hit after hit and we can’t help but fall in love with the feel-good Disco vibes. This funky number is being compared to Michael Jackson and definitely shows another side to Chris.
