4. ‘When You’re Gone’ by Shawn Mendes
It’s a solid breakup track from the young singer Shawn Mendes entitled, ‘When You’re Gone’. It sounds like Shawn has been through the emotional wringer since that bitter split from Camila Cabello. And through his single, it gave a chance to pour out all that pain in one long howl. This is just what comes with the territory -even the biggest artistsrelease break-up songs and sad songs. You can’t sing about love without singing about loss too, and everyone does it: Mendes is just doing it for us now.
5. ‘That’s Hilarious’ by Charlie Puth
It’s clear that the chorus is meant to be an upbeat one, since it’s not unusual for one to think that a song titled ‘That’s Hilarious’ would be one sarcasm, bitterness and/or anger.
However, given the fact that this is a breakup anthem, it implies that puth is a glass-half-full type who isn’t hung up on bad relationships and can take the good with the bad, no matter how happy something makes him. The song plays on similar theme with Puth’s prior hit single, ‘Attention’ with a funky build up to a powerful and dreamy chorus.
